Exploring the Dry Valleys, Then and Now
By ALIA KHAN
Alia Khan, a graduate student at the University of Colorado, Boulder, writes from the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica, where she is studying ephemeral glacier-fed streams.
It’s interesting to think how different our experiences in the Dry Valleys are from those of the first Antarctic explorers 100 years ago. They risked their lives for Antarctic exploration, cut off from communication with family and friends. Now I am able to write blog posts from the middle of the Dry Valleys, speak with relatives in the United States from an I.P. telephone at camp, and even converse with field teams deployed in remote parts of the continent with Iridium satellite phones.
