Antarctic hero hailed

HIS final words “I am just going outside and may be some time” form one of the most famous sentences in modern history.

Army officer Captain Lawrence Oates was a member of Scott’s Antarctic expedition in 1912, and the village of Gestingthorpe is rightly proud of him as Gestingthorpe Hall was his family home.

One-hundred years on, the village is planning a series of events to commemorate him, beginning on March 16 with a memorial service in St Mary’s Church.

There are plans for a flower festival at the church in June, and at the same time, the gardens of his former home will be open to the public for a stroll and cream tea.

The Gestingthorpe History Group is staging an exhibition of Edwardian artefacts in the village hall, and commemorative cards of Captain Oates are being produced for village events.

The year will finish with the planting of an avenue of trees.
