Mawson plane crash anniversary

Updated October 05, 2011 13:58:14

It is a century since the crash of Sir Douglas Mawson’s intended Antarctic exploration plane at Cheltenham racecourse in Adelaide during a test flight.
Unable to take to the air again, the craft was then used as a powered snow sled on the explorer’s journey south.
Remaining parts are now thought to be in the area near Mawson’s Hut in the Antarctic.
